Dial Drift: Why We Re-Zero the Bench Every Morning
Instruments left running overnight don't always come back reading exactly where they left off — we catch that before the first swing of the day.
Any sensor-based instrument can drift a small amount over time — a change in ambient temperature overnight, a slight vibration from the building settling, or just normal electronic tolerance. Individually these are tiny effects. Left unchecked over weeks, they can add up to a measurable shift in what the bench reports.
What "Drift" Actually Looks Like
It's rarely dramatic. A launch monitor might start reading ball speed a fraction of a mile per hour high, or a lie-angle gauge might shift its zero point by half a degree. Neither is enough to notice on a single swing, but both are enough to matter if you're comparing today's fitting against a session from three months ago.
The Morning Routine
Before the first appointment of the day, we run a fixed reference club through both instruments and compare the readout against its known baseline numbers. If either instrument has drifted outside tolerance, it gets recalibrated on the spot — a five-minute process that happens before any client sees the bench.
A five-minute check every morning is cheaper than an afternoon spent chasing why a client's numbers don't match what the same club read last month.
Why This Matters for Repeat Clients
Golfers who come back for a wedge check-in six months after a full-bag fitting expect their old driver numbers to still hold up as a comparison point. Daily zeroing is what makes that comparison trustworthy instead of coincidental.
